　　在美國(guó)的時(shí)候我學(xué)計(jì)算機(jī)之前，還有一段小插曲。那就是我險(xiǎn)些報(bào)考了哈佛的人力學(xué)系。我離開(kāi)北大之后，吸引我的學(xué)校只有兩所，一所是英國(guó)的牛津大學(xué)，就是Oxford University；另一所呢就是Harvard University。那時(shí)候，哈佛大學(xué)人力學(xué)系的系主任，對(duì)我進(jìn)行了面試之后覺(jué)得可以錄取我，并且提出可以給我提供五年的Scholarship。他說(shuō)：“你只要答應(yīng)我一個(gè)條件，”我說(shuō)：“什么條件？”——這個(gè)教授研究的是非常偏的一個(gè)科目，所以招生好多年都沒(méi)有找到一個(gè)合適的學(xué)生。他是在人力學(xué)系研究中國(guó)文化中苗族文化的�！�—他說(shuō)：“只要你跟我學(xué)苗語(yǔ)，我就給你獎(jiǎng)學(xué)金。”我說(shuō)：“可以�！钡�是，我冷靜下來(lái)之后想：我拿了這些錢，在五年之內(nèi)，過(guò)的是天上人間的日子。就算不能從哈佛大學(xué)畢業(yè)，也能夠肄業(yè)。將來(lái)至少能夠跟孫子夸口說(shuō)，爺爺當(dāng)年進(jìn)過(guò)哈佛。但是這還不行，因?yàn)槲夷玫竭@個(gè)學(xué)位，最終的目的是要找個(gè)飯碗。我就考慮，在北美這樣大片的土地上，有多少地方需要我這樣的人才呢？——苗族文化專家。通過(guò)“研究”，我發(fā)現(xiàn)，全北美只有一個(gè)地方需要，就是哈佛大學(xué)、人力學(xué)系、這位老師。所以，如果全北美只有一個(gè)機(jī)會(huì)，他的目標(biāo)里只有我一個(gè)人，那么這個(gè)機(jī)會(huì)對(duì)我來(lái)說(shuō)是百分之百的！但是，五年之后，我仍然處于一個(gè)非常劣勢(shì)的地位。我如果能在哈佛大學(xué)拿到學(xué)位，接下來(lái)的夢(mèng)想就是當(dāng)上哈佛大學(xué)的教授、終身教授。美國(guó)大學(xué)關(guān)于終身教授的規(guī)定：只要這個(gè)教授不去世，你就別想替代他。我想，萬(wàn)一我六十歲就“夭折“了，那位教授八十多歲還健在，我也還是助教。想到這兒，我就對(duì)那位教授說(shuō)：“I want to learn something different�！�

　　當(dāng)時(shí)是1990年，計(jì)算機(jī)在美國(guó)變得popular。而且招生的指標(biāo)還有70個(gè)，我覺(jué)得這是個(gè)attract opportunity，于是決定學(xué)計(jì)算機(jī)。如果學(xué)計(jì)算機(jī)，我就可以成為一個(gè)“計(jì)算機(jī)科學(xué)家”，就可以make money。但當(dāng)時(shí)，我已經(jīng)十年沒(méi)摸過(guò)數(shù)學(xué)了，計(jì)算機(jī)也從來(lái)沒(méi)有接觸過(guò)。我想，我能不能學(xué)計(jì)算機(jī)呢？我用亞里士多德的“三段論”來(lái)推導(dǎo)這個(gè)問(wèn)題：計(jì)算機(jī)是人發(fā)明的東西，凡是人都應(yīng)該懂人發(fā)明的東西。最后，如果我學(xué)不了計(jì)算機(jī)，我就不是人。得出這個(gè)結(jié)論之后，我就要做一些實(shí)際的調(diào)查，看一看計(jì)算機(jī)到底是什么。我到了紐約最大的書店，看看計(jì)算機(jī)架上到底有些什么書。其中有兩架書，

　　上面都有兩個(gè)共同的詞，這兩個(gè)詞深深地吸引了我，那就是programming languages。我看見(jiàn)的其實(shí)只有一個(gè)詞：languages。這個(gè)詞說(shuō)明我與計(jì)算機(jī)是有關(guān)系的——我想，漢語(yǔ)是一種language，英文是我的first foreign language，法語(yǔ)是我的二外語(yǔ)，德語(yǔ)是第三外語(yǔ)。這個(gè)“編程語(yǔ)言”與我所會(huì)的這四門語(yǔ)言一定有共同的地方，所以才能一樣叫語(yǔ)言。于是，我就挑了一本書，看自己能不能讀懂，結(jié)果發(fā)現(xiàn)沒(méi)有一頁(yè)讀懂的。但是我發(fā)現(xiàn)了編程中很重要的一樣?xùn)|西，是邏輯流程。我就靠這兩點(diǎn)——語(yǔ)言和邏輯，和紐約州立大學(xué)計(jì)算機(jī)系的系主任約會(huì)，說(shuō)：“我是一個(gè)非常優(yōu)秀的人才，你必須錄取我�！彼�看了我的成績(jī)單以后，說(shuō)：“可是，你在北大學(xué)習(xí)的四年中，沒(méi)有一門課程與教學(xué)和計(jì)算機(jī)有關(guān)�！蔽艺f(shuō)：“請(qǐng)等一下，我給你陳述一下你為什么必須要我——哈佛大學(xué)正在在考慮錄取我呢！另外，我有三點(diǎn)非常強(qiáng)的優(yōu)勢(shì)。第一，計(jì)算機(jī)與其他機(jī)器相比最重要的特點(diǎn)是它能安裝軟件，那么什么是軟件呢？”他說(shuō)：“programs 。”我又問(wèn)：“那么我們用什么來(lái)寫這個(gè)programs呢？”他說(shuō)：“l(fā)anguage。”我說(shuō)：“那你再看看我的成線單，最重要的一個(gè)詞是什么？”老師說(shuō)：“l(fā)anguage�！蔽艺f(shuō)：“我已經(jīng)掌握了四門語(yǔ)言，再學(xué)一門方言是易如反掌。”教授說(shuō)：“有道理�！比缓笪矣终f(shuō)：“計(jì)算機(jī)能夠工作，它離不開(kāi)人預(yù)設(shè)的邏輯。我在北大做了六年老師，做老師最大的.特點(diǎn)就是訓(xùn)練一個(gè)人的邏輯思維結(jié)構(gòu)。我已經(jīng)

　　It is said that the custom of Spring Festival started in when people offered sacrifice to ancestors in the last month of Chinese lunar calendar. At that time, people prepared the sacrifice by doing thorough cleaning, having bathes and so on. Later, people began to worship different deities as well on that day. It is the time that almost all the farm works were done and people have free time. The sacrificing time changed according to the farming schedule and was not fixed until the Han Dynasty (202BC-220AD). The customs of worshipping deities and ancestors remains even though the ceremonies are not as grand as before. It is also the time that spring is coming, so people held all kinds of ceremonies to welcome it. There are many legends about Spring Festival in Chinese culture. In folk culture, it is also called “guonian” (meaning “passing a year”). It is said that the “nian” (year) was a strong monster which was fierce and cruel and ate one kind of animal including human being a day. Human beings were scared about it and had to hide on the evening when the “nian” came out. Later, people found that “nian” was very scared about the red color and fireworks. So after that, people use red color and fireworks or firecrackers to drive away “nian”. As a result, the custom of using red color and setting off fireworks remains. Preparing the New Year starts 7 days before the New Year’s Eve. According to Chinese lunar calendar, people start to clean the house on Dec. 24, butcher on Dec. 26th and so on. People have certain things to do on each day. These activities will end Jan. 15th of the lunar calendar. My speech is over. thank you.
